Support for Parents/Carers and Pupils in Mathematics

We recognise the important role that parents and carers play in supporting children’s learning in mathematics. We aim to work in partnership with families to help pupils develop confidence, fluency and enjoyment in maths.

How Parents & Carers Can Support Learning at Home

Parents/Carers can help their child by:

  • Practising number bonds and times tables regularly
  • Encouraging mental maths during everyday activities (shopping, cooking, telling the time)
  • Talking about maths using the correct mathematical vocabulary – see the year group knowledge organisers.
  • Supporting homework tasks and discussing strategies used in school

We understand that maths may be taught differently from when parents/carers were at school. Our approach focuses on developing a deep understanding of concepts, not just quick answers.

Useful Guides for Parents/Carers

To help parents/carers understand how maths is taught in school, we provide the following guides:

  • Calculation Policy – shows the methods used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Year Group Progression Documents – outlines what pupils are expected to know by the end of each year
  • Time Tables Progression Document
  • Maths Knowledge Organisers – key language used in lessons
  • Curriculum Overview – what children will learn across the year

Recommended Online Resources

The following websites provide high-quality support for pupils and parents/carers:

  • BBC Bitesize – explanations and interactive activities for all primary maths topics
  • NRICH – problem-solving and reasoning activities
  • Mathsframe – fun practice for multiplication facts
  • White Rose Maths – Parent Resources

These resources support the methods used in school and encourage independent practice.

Supporting All Learners

We ensure that all pupils are supported in mathematics through:

  • Targeted interventions for pupils who need additional support
  • Adapted tasks and resources for pupils with SEND and EAL
  • Additional challenge and enrichment for pupils working beyond age-related expectations

If you have any concerns about your child’s progress in maths, please speak to their class teacher in the first instance.

Staying Informed

Parents/carers will be kept informed about maths learning through:

  • Curriculum information shared on the school website
  • Parent workshops or information meetings
  • Regular communication from class teachers
